Inclement Weather Policy


In the event it becomes necessary to cancel classes or close the institution due to severe weather or road conditions, the procedures outlined below will be followed. The Campus Police will collect as much data as possible concerning the weather, road conditions, and the weather forecast (for day classes, this shall occur between 3:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m.). Department personnel will then consult the vice president for Academic Affairs and/or the president. The vice president for Academic Affairs may make the final decision regarding the cancellation of classes. The president shall make the final decision regarding the closing of the campus. A decision about the cancellation of day classes shall be made by approximately 6:00 a.m. The decision regarding evening classes shall be made at approximately 4:00 p.m. in the afternoon of the day that evening classes may be cancelled; however, sudden changes in weather conditions could result in a schedule change at any time.

Students, faculty and staff are requested to monitor the JSCC website, the college's Facebook and Twitter pages, Emergency Text and/or the radio or TV station, In general, the College will stay open as long as it is safe to do so. In the event of inclement weather, however, the College will notify radio and television stations if classes must be canceled or delayed. A message will be on our phone system and can be accessed at any time by calling 731-424-3520 or 1-800-355-5722. Closing information will also be posted on the College Website, www.jscc.edu and sent out through JSCC Text Alert and automated calling.

It is the policy of Jackson State Community College (JSCCt)o cancel classes under extreme weather conditions. In the event that it is necessary for the president/designee to declare the specific hours as emergency closing, the following guidelines will apply:

  1. Regular full-time and part-time employees on the active payroll who are scheduled to work during the declared times of closing will be granted time off from work with pay. Employees who are not scheduled to work, or who are on scheduled leave, will not be paid for the emergency closing.
  2. For clerical and support staff employees who are required to work during the time period during which time JSCC is officially closed, the time worked should be charged as straight overtime hours. Additional hours that exceed the regularly scheduled hours should be charged to overtime.
  3. Employees not affected by the emergency closing, i.e., employees attending official meetings or workshops outside the college's service area during the time period of the closing, should not charge time to emergency closing.
  4. If an emergency closing has not been declared, due to inclement weather, and an employee is prevented from reporting to work for normally scheduled work hours, annual leave or leave without pay will be charged.
  5. Permanent part-time employees will be affected on a pro-rated basis in each of the areas listed above.
  6. The president may approve exceptions to this policy as deemed appropriate.
