Policy: Schedule and Administration of Student Ratings of Instruction for all Faculty

Purpose: The purpose of this policy is to ensure consistency in the student rating of instruction process. It sets guidelines for how often faculty are reviewed by students and sets a schedule that avoids survey fatigue.

Responsibilities:

The President is responsible for ensuring conformance to this policy. The Director of Institutional Research and Accountability is responsible for ensuring conformance to this policy. The Vice-President for Academic Affairs is responsible for ensuring conformance to this policy.

Policy Procedures:

All Jackson State faculty, full-time and part-time, will be rated on instruction by students with the instrument prescribed each academic year.

  • Each full-time faculty member will be rated by students in two course sections per academic year. More sections will be rated if requested by the Division Dean or Vice President of Academic Affairs. Faculty can request additional sections via the Division Dean.
  • Each part-time or adjunct faculty member will be rated by students in one course section per academic year. More sections will be rated if requested by the Division Dean or Vice President of Academic Affairs. Faculty can request additional sections via the Division Dean.
  • Faculty will be rated on a rotation dividing the surveys evenly between fall and spring terms. Division Deans will determine the rotation schedule for his/her respective Division. Division Deans will also be responsible for choosing the course sections to be rated each term.
  •  All new faculty members, full-time and part-time , will be rated in the first term of employment at JSCC.
  •  All faculty members within the tenure/promotion cycle will be rated within the fall term of each academic year.

Surveys are not to be given to a course section when fewer than 60% of enrolled students are in attendance. If low attendance is a continuing issue, a different course section should be selected by the faculty member for rating.
