Writing Center

The Essentials

The Writing Center at Jackson State is the place for you to find help with all of your writing projects here at college. Whether you are working on an assignment for class or a personal project, like a resume or scholarship application, you can find the support you need to make the piece stronger -- and to make you a better writer.

In fact, that's the goal of the Writing Center: to make you a better writer.

By learning your strengths and weaknesses with the help of a tutor, you will be able to focus your energy on improving the areas of your writing that really need your attention.

You'll get better help if you do a few things before you visit the Center.

  • First, make an appointment whenever you can. That way, you can be sure a tutor is available to help you.
  • Second, bring two copies of your paper with you to the session, if you've already started writing, that is. Also, bring any useful notes, textbooks, or sources. Bring a copy of the assignment you've been given as well.
  • Last, come ready to work! And get ready to become a better writer!

What We Do

At the JSCC Writing Center, tutors are available to help you become a better writer. When you visit the Writing Center, you and your tutor will work on your paper together. Your tutor will make recommendations to improve your paper -- and your writing in general -- based on what you and the tutor discuss. You will always be responsible for the final decisions about what changes to make in your paper.

You can get help in a number of ways:

  • Face-to-face at the Center: the most productive and best help!
Video conference via web-cam: just like a face-to-face session, when you can't make it into the Center on JSCC's campus.
E-mail service: for limited advice on a project. Visit the Center's website to e-mail your paper.

Call 425.8848 for an appointment, or stop by the Library Building to visit the Center!

What We Don't Do

A writing tutor's job is to help you become a better writer, not to "fix" your papers so that you get a better grade this one time. After all, you're at college to improve yourself, and you want to be a better writer when you leave JSCC, right?

Thus, a tutor will never write a paper for you. A tutor will never re-write a paper for you. A tutor will never fix the errors in your paper for you. A tutor will help you learn how to do all of those things yourself. You must always make decisions about which of the tutors' recommendations you will take, and you will always be responsible for the final paper you turn in to your professor.

Who Can Visit the Center?

Any JSCC student can visit the Writing Center for help with any writing project.

If you are a student, you can get help with writing assignments for any class, not just writing courses, and personal writing like resumes or scholarship applications.

Also, just in case you have the need, children are welcome at the Writing Center, but only during their parents' sessions.

Location

The Writing Center is in the Library Building, on the first floor, facing the Quad.
