Dual Services Contract

Extra compensation for services to the college by employees of other state agencies and state institutions of education will be paid by the college directly to the agency or institution pursuant to an agreement between the college and the home agency or institution and will be paid to faculty by the home employer pursuant to the guidelines and limitations set by the state. No compensation shall be paid directly to any employees of any state agency or institution of education performing services for the college but may only be paid by the college to the agency or institution pursuant to agreement. The extra compensation paid to the faculty member will be counted in determining the maximum amount of extra pay he or she may receive during the fiscal year.

Course Overload Policy for Faculty

It is general policy that faculty do not teach more than their normal course load each semester. A normal course load is defined as 15 credit hours or the equivalent thereof. Under extraordinary circumstances, it may be necessary for a faculty member to teach extra courses above and beyond the normal course load. In such cases, the faculty member will be compensated at the published overload rate for teaching extra courses.

In order for a faculty member to teach an overload course, it must be determined that the course is necessary and that an approved adjunct faculty member cannot be found. Each division should have a procedure whereby the faculty have an equal opportunity to teach those overload courses. Approval for teaching all overload classes must be obtained in writing in advance from the dean and Vice President of Academic Affairs. (TBR policy 5.01.05.00)

Extra Compensation

Any compensated teaching overload must be in addition to the standard faculty requirement of 30 semester hours per academic year. Extra compensation for overload for the academic year normally shall be provided by contract in the spring semester. The Vice President of Academic Affairs may recommend to the president a contract for extra compensation in the fall semester if it is determined that the overload cannot be adjusted as part of the regular faculty load in the spring semester.

As per federal law, faculty who take on extra duties during off-contract times must receive appropriate remuneration. (TBR policy 5.01.05.00)

Extra Compensation Schedule

Extra compensation rates are recommended by the Vice President of Academic Affairs and approved by the president and revised based on TBR guidelines, resources available, and the needs of the college.

Faculty Compensation During Summer Sessions and Intersessions

The Tennessee Board of Regents recognizes summer session and intersession assignments of faculty as separate assignments from academic year appointments. It is further recognized that compensation for faculty assignments during summer sessions and intersessions should be a factor of the regular academic year salary, which considers the nature and the extent of the duties and responsibilities involved in these separate appointments. To provide for such appropriate levels of compensation for faculty service during the summer sessions and intersessions, the board has adopted the following compensation provisions:

Regular academic year faculty personnel who serve the institution as teaching faculty during intersessions and summer session shall be compensated at the rate of 1/32 of their academic year salary per semester hour of teaching load. The maximum summer and intersession pay may not exceed 25 percent of the preceding academic year’s salary. (Reference TBR Policy No. 5:02:04:10)

Salary Payments

Salary for all full-time faculty is paid in twelve equal installments on the last working day of each month.  (TBR Policy 5:01:00:00)

Comp Time

Academic year faculty who do not receive annual leave are able to arrange for “comp time” for absences that do not fall under TBR and state sick leave regulations. Comp time arrangements are to be made in advance between the faculty member and their immediate supervisor.
