Faculty Responsibilities - Committees and Service

College-Sanctioned Trips

Because college-sanctioned trips often require students to miss other classes, such trips are encouraged only if they assist in the learning process. (TBR Policy 4:03:03:50 and TBR Policy 4:03:03:00)

Prior to a trip the instructor must:

  1. Submit a Travel Request Form.
  2. Arrange for transportation.
  3. Require all students participating in field trips that involve off-campus travel to complete and sign Jackson State’s “Hold Harmless Agreement.” (Forms may be obtained in the Office of the Vice President of Financial and Administrative Affairs.) A separate form must be completed by each student for each trip. The instructor must submit completed forms to the office of the Vice President of Academic Affairs.

Student Advising

Faculty are responsible for the academic advising of students. Faculty are to be familiar with academic policies, programs, and processes contained in the college catalog. Procedures and criteria to be used in advising are available. Faculty will be responsible for the procedures used for making advising appointments for students. During the summer or times when nine- and ten-month faculty are not on campus, students should be advised by Completion Coaches or the staff of the Registration Center.

Great Expectations Orientation

Faculty are encouraged to participate in the institution’s new student orientation program, Great Expectations. As per state and federal law, faculty who are not currently under contract when the orientations sessions take place are under no obligation to participate and cannot be required to participate without remuneration.

Faculty Meetings

Faculty are expected as part of their professional duty to attend and participate in division and other college meetings during in-service and the academic year.

Committee Service

Faculty are to serve on division and college committees as an effective means for contributing to the progress, shared governance, and general welfare of the college.  Committee membership principles are guided by appropriate faculty representation and continuity of experience and expertise. Thus, committee elections shall be on an annual basis and, when possible, shall be for staggered terms of two years. Committee structure of the college, with faculty membership, is provided on jWeb.

Curriculum Development

The establishment and maintenance of a current and dynamic curriculum is a responsibility of the faculty. Faculty should submit course and program proposals, course description changes, and similar requests to colleagues in the same area, immediate supervisor, and the dean for consideration and possible submission to the Vice President of Academic Affairs for action by the curriculum committee.

Textbooks and Instructional Materials

The decision to change a textbook or other instructional material in a course must be approved by the appropriate dean or program director. It is expected that a textbook will be used for a minimum period of three years when possible and that all sections of a course have a common text(s) except in special circumstances approved by the dean and Vice President of Academic Affairs. Change in a textbook that necessitates a new order by the bookstore should be made as early as possible during the last year of use of the existing textbook.

The academic freedom of faculty must be a consideration when textbook decisions are made.

Traffic and Parking Regulations

All motor vehicles operated on campus by faculty must be registered. Parking tags must be displayed on faculty vehicles. The policy for “Traffic and Parking Regulations” is provided in full in the Jackson State Community College Catalog and Student Handbook.

Copyright Requirements

All faculty are expected to observe the restrictions of copyright. No materials of any type should be copied without the permission of the publisher except as may be allowed under the “fair use” provisions of federal copyright law. Additional information on copyright requirements can be obtained from the library director.

Copyright restrictions also apply to computer software. No unlicensed copies of computer software may be maintained or used on any computer equipment owned by Jackson State Community College. Additional information on software licensing requirements can be obtained from the Office of Informational Technology. (Reference TBR Policy No. 5:01:06:00 and 1.08.05.00)

Commencement

Faculty attendance at annual commencement exercises is mandatory. Any faculty member who wishes to be excused from commencement must gain approval from the Vice President of Academic Affairs. Academic regalia is required for commencement exercises. Faculty members will be given the option to rent regalia.

ADA Accessibility

As per TBR and institutional policy, faculty are to ensure that all courses are made ADA accessible. It is the institution’s role to provide appropriate training and resources to faculty as they work to ensure course accessibility.
